Stuff invented by Hollywood, TV and a few people with great imaginations. It doesn't exist and never been detected. Supposedly it's a physical thing that ghosts can leave around. Sort of like the slime in Ghostbusters.

By definition, anything "paranormal" is outside the realm of science. If anything paranormal had a physical presence or could have any affect on the "normal" world, then it could be measured in some way (weight, chemical composition, color, temperature, etc.). Of course, then it would be in the realm of science and no longer paranormal.
So in effect, if it can be detected by any of your senses or any device, it isn't paranormal. Take that a step further, and you can see that we have no reason to believe anything paranormal exists because we have no way to detect it outside of our imaginations.
On the other hand, materials claimed to be ectoplasm by some psychics were investigated a few years back. Ghosts, if they exist, are apparently very high in wheat flour and water; corn syrup; and/or unflavored gelatin.

Previous posters are wrong. Ectoplasm is a real substance sometimes left behind by a ghost.
I'm sure there are numerous books on the subject. Did you try wikipedia?

A paranormal substance would be some thing that existed outside the realm of science. Like some sort of ghostly residue, or slime. It doesn't actually exist, but it's amusing at the movies and on TV.
