Because if they didn't get rid of them they would be like the Yankees with a high payroll and lots of controversy regarding how a team with that many all stars not win the world series.

the Red Sox are trying different things every year so that they can win another World Series now they are trying to put together great defense where as before they tried offense

They can't keep everybody. They have tons of money but if they tried to keep those guys they would be spending too much money.
