If you could round up the items, try a stationary bicycle whose back wheel has a copper core which can spin between two magnets. The two magnets are connected to a electric bulb. When the bike is pedalled, the core rotates between the magnets creating a current which can light a bulb. Sort of a "green" feeling to it.

i am not sure what the parameters of your project are but some of the best inventions are the simple things that ,mostly , we take for granted.
how about something like the ring-pull on a can? or light reflective sunglasses. perhaps a zipper or a cordless power tool.
these items are ,on the face of it , simple but are in fact quite complicated and impact on our daily lives.
hope this helps , and if not , all the best anyway.

Do a Van der Graaf generator. It's fun, hands-on and not too complicated - my sixth-grader built one with a minimum of help from my husband.
