i did some work for a contractor in virginia, that contractor was paid progresive weekly payments by the main gc they then intern did not pay any of the subcontractors working under them. they never id sighn my purchase order and after two week they left the job. is a veral contract binding?

It is, but the problem with an oral contract is proving what the agreement was. Oral contracts are fine, it's the proof of the elements of the contract that's the problem.

Only if it is for less than $500 (sale of goods) or the service can be completed within one year. Some states co-mingle these requirements for both goods AND service contracts, setting a price limit on service contracts of $500. I suggest you speak with an attorney. More facts will be needed to tell you whether you could prevail or not, such as when it happened (you might have passed the statute of limitations to file an action), who was present, etc.

Not unless it was heard by a third un-biased person, in other words, someone who has nothing to gain by the the contract from either person.
Otherwise, it's just your word against his.
