I was going to plug an extension cord into my outside outlet but it was filled with ants. I sprayed around the outlet, and the ants are gone now, but is it safe to plug anything into now?

THOSE ARE FIRE ANTS.
They love electricity. You can probably use the outlet, but at some point the ants will short circuit the box.
Get some Andro, ASAP, and spread it.

These ants are killers and if one has allergies to their venom, it can be deadly.

If you're worried about the wet spray in the electrical outlet then I suggest Borax... Yes the laundry detergent booster. For some reason the ants get cut to bits on it and its not harmful to your pets or your electricity. I've been using it for years and it's never failed me.

Yeah, I wouldn't be alarmed about that. We are also having a time with ants, it must be that time of the season. But haven't seen any near the outside outlet. I have a rubber gasket on my cover plate to help seal it out. good luck.

Yes, Mitchell, it is alright to use the outlet. As Edward stated, fire ants are attracted to the electrical circuit and they can short circuit your wiring. Treat on a regular basis.
