its really hard, and please dont use the "if they look you in the eye they are telling the truth" rule, as to some, its rude to stare in someone eyes, and other people naturally look around while they are talking,,,,i know i have been accused of telling a lie,,,,, due to the fact that i remember things in pictures , mentally, so my eyes move around the picture as i am talking about/recalling things,,,,
go with you instinct, your gut feeling

This works with young teenagers (if you are an adult)
Ask the question up to three times. Maintain eye contact and don't change any of the words. If their answer doesn't change, they are telling the truth. If they are lying, they will admit it the third time you ask them.
You also have to act like you know they are lying, but smile at the same time so that they don't feel threatened.
Works every time for me - I'm a teacher!

Nobody can lie to you unless you also tell lies. It's a natural law. If you never lie, you won't be lied to either. If you are telling lies to them, it's pretty much a certainty that they are lying to you.

body language. the subject while lying, will often gesture with their left hand, mostly near the face or mouth, or, they wont make eye contact.the brain lies, but the body mostly always tells the truth.
