The pet rock actually started in the early to mid seventies. It was a rock(some were decorated with eyes, hair, etc) that came in a box with holes in it(it had to breathe didn't it?).It quickly became a fad and later died out by the time the early eighties hit.

Pet Rocks were a 1970s fad conceived by Los Gatos, California advertising executive Gary Dahl. The first Pet Rocks were ordinary gray pebbles bought at a builder's supply store and marketed as if they were live pets. The fad lasted only about six months, ending with the Christmas season in December 1975; but in its short run, the Pet Rock made Dahl a millionaire.

Years ago, they came out with a Rock that people bought, brought home and named it, sat and talked to it and treated it like a pet. Talk about being lonely! Felt sorry for these people. The saddest thing about it is that this company was actually able to sell these things and probably made a fortune for the short time the fad lasted. I know if I would have thought this up, I would have been made the laughing stock of the world and kicked out of any patent place I would have applied for. Some people have it made for sure. I'm just jealous because I didn't think of it first. :o)

The Pet rock made some people very wealthy about 25 - 30 years ago. It was a great gag item, and the talk of the country for quite a while.

Not if it is hand painted and given a personality with a unique history. Like "This rock was given to George Washington the day after he won the battle of Mount Forth".
