Ok, so I'm English and dont get the American gun thing. I understand the concept of having a gun to defend your home - we have the phrase "an Englishmans home is his castle" ok, fair do's - but a fully automatic machinegun?? who the hell you defending your home from - the iraqi republican guard? and you have no limit on how many you can buy in most places?... what, you still dont feel safe holding just the one thing that spews nickel plated lead 400 times a second?
I'm ignorant, ill admit it, so please educate me - why does ANYONE need something that has no other purpose than to kill alot of people, very quickly (lets face it - you cant use the 'i use my gun for hunting' excuse when talking about an uzi)

Ah, but they have "rights". And one of those "rights" is to be able to kill thousands of their countrymen every year. It is running at somewhere between 17 - 30,000 per annum.

If a burglar is 'packing heat', I want to be able to out-gun him? It's a reactionary thing that is still lingering from our colonial period? We are born of revolution, then had a massive and bloody Civil War, then created a huge black-market during Prohibition and the recent 'War on Drugs'. The people who were kids in the 1950's grew up watching Westerns, where the good guy was always armed. You can't find any police or action shows here that don't involve guns and shoot-outs. I heard one sentiment that I feel sums it up. "An armed man is a citizen, an unarmed man is a subject".

Just on of those things people do. Not for home protection. Some restore old cares, some collect stamps, Some spend loads of money on baseball or fishing. Each has a hobby. Some just get guns to have them and others to shoot them for fun. Like having a fast car and the speed limit is on 70mph (sorry been a while since delt with kilometers). It is just a hobby. What is your hobby? Darts, billards, golf, fishing ,cars, guns, motorcycles? Understand I hope.

It's not so much a need, but a want. Many people collect guns of all types, not to use for killing but as a hobby. As far as home protection, a machine gun is not the preferred weapon.
