I've had starter problems before, but now it just winds out and never catches. It's not the starter... I heard it's where the gears mate up to actually start the motorcycle. What part do I need to buy to fix this?

So the starter make noies and nothing happens but a winding noise. The best advice that i can give you is to pull the starter out of the motor cycle and apply power to the starter using a small battery charger under 5 amps,or use the battery out of your bike.If the armature(GEAR ON THE STARTER)does not move to the end of the shaft when power is applied then the starter is bad.If it does move then inspect the armature gear for wearif there is no wear the check the flywheel gear this can be done by looking in the whole where the starter goes.Take off the left side engine cover and there will be a 26mm nut that you can use to turn the motor over to check the gear.with everything that i told you,you should be able to figur out what you need for parts.

You need the starter bendix gear. This a VERY common problem with all older Virago's. There is also a spring type clip about an inch and a half in diameter that snaps on to the bendix gear that will most likely need replaced too.

the wiring of the bike you have defined ability that there is the two a needed ingredient lacking or as i think in case you or somebody else has labored on it that a rather basic mistake has been made. stick to the super pink lead from the battery it is going to bypass to a gadget stated as a starter solenoid. this may well be a black field relating to the size of a ZIPPO lighter with 2 brass terminals with nuts on and a single spade connector. ideal observing the solenoid the lead from the battery ought to be on one side and all that should be on the different terminal is is the lead that runs to the starter. the different ring terminals ought to be linked to the battery side. a pink with white tracer lead with a spade lucar connector ought to be on the spade lug of the solenoid, it particularly is the exciter twine ( from the starter button). it is likewise needed which you have the connections on the solenoid around the main suitable way too because it is polarity extensive unsleeping. in case you won't have the capacity to discover the little black field with the terminals.... then no remember if this is not on the lower back of the starter ( which on the virago this is not) then it is lacking!!!! you do no longer understand how frequently i've got had to easily right this hassle-free diagnostic fault on motorcycles that have been " REBUILT" by employing their vendors.. if i had a £ for each time i've got corrected that i could have a clean bike :-)

You'll have to remove the left crankcase cover to inspect what's needed.
It could be part of the starter clutch, or the flywheel.
This was a common problem with early model Viragos.
