Rock- it's a toss up between Janis Joplin and Ann Wilson of Heart.
Jazz- It's a toss up between Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and I have a soft spot for Bessi Smith.
R&B/Pop - Joss Stone and Alicia Keys both blow Maria Carey out of the water.

well i wouldnt say she's the best EVER because 1) i havent heard every female singer & 2) thats sort of based on style preferance. but i think Lacey Mosely of Flyleaf has an amazing voice, and she can not only sing soft ballads & some runs here & there, she is one of the best girl screamers ive heard- even though her screaming moments aren't as numerous they prove that she can do really amazing things with her voice & sing a wide variety of songs

i'd say you need to listen to more music. mariah scarey couldn't hold the pee bag for the all time greats such as billie holiday, celine dion, ella fitzgerald, marion anderson and whitney houston before bobby.
