Salamanders are amphibians, lizards are reptiles. Salamanders lay their eggs in water, like frogs and toads, and the larva that hatches is called an eft. It has gills, not lungs, and it lives in the water until it metamorphoses into its adult form with lungs. Then it can leave the water. But it has soft, permeable skin like frogs and toads, and generally needs wet or moist surroundings. Some stay in the eft stage all their lives.
Lizards lay eggs on land, and they hatch into small lizards; there is no larval stage.
