a few days ago i was driving my truck and all the sudden my lights started flashing (dash lights, radio, headlights etc) and my truck lost power. Its acting like there is a huge electrical short but i have not found one, and none of my fuses are burned out. I have looked at all the wiring i could find but nothing major seemed to be wrong. I turned it off once it started going crazy and when i couldn't find ne thing i started it back up. it was fine till i took it out of park and put it into reverese, it started stumbling and died i started it back up in park and again it runs fine, till i try drive again it dies. i don't know what the problem is i've heard a theory that it might be my distributor.... can anyone help me?

I apreciate the input unfortunatly none of what was suggested helped. i checked the codes and nothing came up it just flashed 12 over and over again. the connections to the battery were one of the first things i checked and they all seemed to be good. i checked the battery by connecting it to another one with jumper cables it still stalled. and now there seems to be a new problem, if i get hard on the gas while its still in park it will stall. and whenever i turn the headlights on all my gauges start reading low and idle gets rougher. i have also pulled apart the distributor and cleaned it i'm not sure about how worn it is or not. i did find large amounts of carbon on the contacts though.

The ground cable between the engine and the chassis came loose.

That kind of problem can certainly drive you nuts...a couple of things that come to mind are the ignition switch itself, and the TCC solenoid (Torque Converter Control)...not necessarily together, but possibly two different problems.

You say the engine tries to die when you put it in gear, like it bogs down and idle drops...often missed is the solenoid, which can stick, keeping the torque converter locked up all the time. It will definitely cause an engine to stall, from personal experience...

The flickering lights may or not be related to the ignition switch, but It is worth a look...

What you describe sounds like there might be something haywire with the charging system and a power-train management problem.
Start with the basics, check all of the starting/charging system, check all of the connections.
Also check for diagnostic codes in the computer.
Go Here------>

http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/l/bl_dtcs_14a.htm

…and scroll down below the chart that appears. Read and follow the instructions for retrieving the codes. It is simple, safe, non-intrusive, and only requires a paperclip.
With the codes in hand, refer to a QUALITY repair or shop manual for proper diagnostics.AFTER diagnostics, perform the indicated repairs.
Bear in mind, a code only indicates values outside expected parameters for a circuit or system, and not necessarily a failed component.

Start with the basics. Remove the battery cables and clean them until they're shiny metal with a wire brush. Reconnect them. Have your battery and charging system checked at an auto parts store that sells batteries. If your battery is 5 years old, you may need a new one.

i would look at the ground cable on the block from the battery i've seen this problem many times this would explain when you go from park to reverse the engine tilts and the cable could move if it's loose or frayed at the block, try tightening the bolt that holds the cable to the block....good luck
