earth's magnetic field is created by the rotation of the core deep inside the earth, as this massive ball of iron rotates it creates an electrical change much like a generator, this charge causes the magnetic field.

compasses use the magnetic field to show you (approximately) which way is north and south. the northern lights are caused by the m,agnetic field channelling energy from the sun to the polar regions of the earth where they interact with the upper atmosphere to create the light we see.

The earth has a magnetic firled. It's what makes compasses work.
