My 6month old seems to have chest congestion.

1. His voice ( or usual noises I should say :) ) is "raspy".
2. He coughs every say 3-5min and you could hear the phlegm.
3. Does not seem uncomfortable or cranky. No fever.

What are my options? Is there a natural remedy that I can give him to eliminate the phlegm?

Tylenol seems to harsh for this case but I want to make sure this doesn't become a full blown ear infection.

You could treat it like croup. Take him in the bathroom (not in the shower) and run a hot shower with the door closed. Let him breathe the steam for about 10 minutes. It might lubricate his throat and lungs enough to give him some relief. You can also get baby Vicks and rub it on his chest.

Tylenol will do nothing for chest congestion, and it will not prevent an ear infection, all it does is relieve pain and bring down a fever, it doesn't relieve what is causing the pain or fever. Do what Kat H said with the hot shower. They even make a baby vapor bath, we would squirt it all over the tub, then turn on the hot shower and sit on little stools in the bathroom looking at books. The steam mixed with the smell of the baby vapor bath might help loosen up his chest congestion. After you are done, make sure to keep him warm and change him into clean, dry clothes because the ones he wears in the bathroom will get damp from the steam.

It's ok to use Tylenol, but that won't help the congestion. Pediatricians are not recommending any cold & cough medications for infants under 2 anymore. But, if you look at the cases where the infants died due to taking cold medicines, they were given HIGH doses of it, and they also contained pseudophedrine, which is no longer available over the counter. So, talk to your doctor and see what they say.

If your baby doesn't seem uncomfortable or cranky, I wouldn't worry about it!

Just give him plenty of fluids.

If you want a natural remedy, I think there are some herbal teas you can make a dilute, with sage and thyme that can help soothe a cough or sore throat.

Chest Congestion In Babies

Antibiotics usually take 5 days to work. If she is smiling, eating and happy, then don't worry too much. Time will take care of the rest of the cold (up to two weeks). A humidifier will help loosen the cough. If it still persists, talk to your pediatrician about breathing treatments. My son had a deep cough over Christmas (might have been Croup) and I did a couple of breathing treatments of abuterol (sp), which helped. There are quite a few different medicines for breathing treatments, so talk to your pediatrician.

When my little one gets congested and when he had pneumonia we used a vaporizer ( not a humidifier) at night and nap times. Make sure you put it far away from his bed and up off the floor so there is no chance of a steam burn. But we would close the door and the steam helped really break up his congestion. We also used the waterless vaporizer at the same time because the menthol vapors helped clear any nasal congestion and make him a little more comfortable. And last we used the vapor rub... yes we use them all at the same time, but it really helps make him comfortable while breaking up the congestion. Good luck!!

Tylenol really doesn't do much for congestion, even the tylenol designed for it in my opinion doesn't help. Try a humidifier in his/her room with the door closed so it stays in the room, use a little vicks in the water, they have baby vicks vapor rub for their chest, and I know it sounds strange but put a little in the middle of the bottom of their foot. Also, call your doctor just to make sure, but I use just over the counter stuff like childrens congestion medicine, even the off brands. I can't think of the brand names off the top of my head, but just go to Wal-Mart and there are tons of them. Also a nice steamy bath room and a nice warm bath also.

the best thing is for your baby to cough out the phlegm. That is the body's way of getting rid of the virus. Make sure he is well hydrated. You can use a humidifier to loosen up the phlegm.

You dont want to stop the coughing because that's the baby's way of getting the stuff out of his lungs. It's rarely recommended that you give a baby any medicine at all unless instructed to do so by the pediatrician
