A minimum of $2.00 - If the service was extremely good you can leave anything between $5 - $10
15-20 % Of the bill is an exaggeration. If the bill comes up to $100, I'm not leaving $15-20. Imagine a big gathering and the bill is $250, are you going to leave $35 as a tip.
I am from Europe so I am talking about Europe here, the US has a completely different system.

Standard for daytime meals: Breakfast and Lunch is 15%. Standard tip for Dinner time is 20% But I always give a little more if the service is real good. If not I leave the standard amount. Real Good Advice; If your service was real poor but you loved the food and want to go back, leave nothing less than the standard. Believeit or not waiters & waitress's rember bad tippers...Do I need to say more?

glad someone asked. It seems everyone listens to the wait staff and now everyone thinks there entitled to 20% of the meal. the tip is a gratuity, (gracias, greatful) for better than good service. for me, if It,s very good service I pay between $2.00 and a top maximum of $5.00 no matter if the dinner was 9.99 or 6 times that. And I don't think I'd ever have a need to spend more than $40 for one person. wait staff still recieve a wage, less than minimum often, but not always, and back in 1980, I worked at a Low budget family resurant, and made no less than $40 per night, and friday nights closer to $100, I was bringing home nearly $400 after taxes, thats like $10 per hour, when back then my frineds working at the mall made minimum ($2.65 hr) and a few work construction at $6.00 hr, they where busting there asses, and I just had to put up with a few wierd customers once ina while, and most gave $ 1.00 tip and families with a few kids would leave 2 or 3, but it was good pay, and my daugher in college workes at a some what fancy steak house and makes about $70 night, and doubles that on the weekend, plus her base pay of $4 hr. so they are not hurting, and no one is knocking themselves out, it might be hopping once ina while, but thats what your there for, and sometimes you just don't deserve a tip, we all have bad times. but don't fall for that 20% line, and that all should get a tip. save it for the deserving, they would do it for less, thats why there good at it.

That's EXACTLY what you do Sean! If its a 100 dollar check then you leave 15-20 dollars depending on the service! If you have a 100 dollar or 250 dollar check then they had to do much more for you than if you had a 20-40 dollar check. Good rule of thumb would be 15% at lunch and 20% at dinner. If the service wasn't good or was less than what you expected then you can always tip less...

You should leave 18-20% no matter what the size of the bill is. You have to remember that if a server is waiting on a large party they are doing considerably more work then if there were just two diners. Also something to consider is the fact that often servers are obligated to give a percentage of their sales to the restaurant no matter how much you decide to leave. So if you end up leaving nothing it is actually costing your waiter money out their pocket to wait on you!

As a server myself, people tip 15-20% there are the cheap people who don't want to tip, that's fine cause I remember people, that is why I have tons of regulars who will only eat at my place if I'm working. Those who do not tip won't get the same service they got before.

If the service was good, 15% of the bill is standard, 20% is generous. If the service was lousy, then you can decide how much, if any below 15% you wish to give.

Normally, 15% of the bill is considered acceptable. However, if you plan on returning to the restaurant or if the service was exceptional, then 20% is good.
