Because the people did not want to enter the war. The US was in a very self-centered place at the time, especially with the depression going on right after a crazy period of flourishment.
The gov't had been trying to enter the war for years. They were supplying their allies only, and were using many different PR campaigns to get the people behind the war.

Many historians would have a field day with this question simply because it was evident that the U.S. government was only holding out from entering the war because the American people were not interested and because they were supplying both sides. There is a very convincing conspiracy theory that believes that the we had known the attack was going to occur and used it to throw ourselves into war... We can compare it to 9/11... the American moral shot up and we voted for war because we were attacked. This was true in WWII as well.

Because it wasn't clear on which side to fight. There were plenty of influential Nazi sympatizers in the U.S. who wanted the U.S. to assist Germany in its war against Russia. But siding with Germany would also put the U.S. in a position of de-facto declaring war against Britain and France, which wasn't something the U.S. government was too keen on. The stalemate was resolved when Japan, which had an alliance with Germany, attacked Pearl Harbor...

The President had campaigned on the fact he would not lead the US into the war and did his best to remain neutral.
After Japan attacked Pearl Harbour the US declared war on Japan. Stupidly Hitler declared war on the US, it he hadn't the US would probably have taken care of the Japs and ignored the war in Europe

That's a good question....I believe it's because they wanted to show their independance from Britain. Even Canada had been in it for years and had taken a major sh** kicking. The US was more or less forced into it by the bombing or probably would have never gotten involved.

Because they wanted full support for the war. Look at the war in Iraq, the public doesn't support it and it is going horribly.

They wanted to stay neutral as long as possible, so we wouldn't have to fight someone else's battles, but the bombing dragged us in. Hope that helps
