turtwig, piplup, and chimchar are the first 3 pokemon, that you can choose from and you can only pick one. start with that, then work on getting one of each type. (i.e. electric, water, normal, grass, etc..)

It depends on your starter piplup is a good water type to raise, chimchar is a good fire type and turtwig is a good grass.
Grass-Budew, Turtwig (both are good grass types)
Electric-shinx (I highly reccomend catching him early in the game, he/she is a force to be reckoned with)
Water-Buziel, Piplup, Shellos
Fire-Ponyta, Chimchar
Fighting-Machop
Flying-Starly (great because Starly learns wing attack early on)
Psychic-abra (one of the best psychic pokemon is its evolution, alakazam)

Spiritomb because he is ghost and dark he has no moves against him that are super-effective.
