i put a 81 yamaha xs400 i put the motor in a atv frame i want to run it with out a battery but cant get spark?

i was told i could take most of the electrical off and just keep the basic's but now its not getting spark help me plz ?
if n e one nows were i could find a wiring diagram for that motor it would greatly help thx

the motor cycle had a battery but i was told i could bypass the battery because im not using lights or any thing on the atv and just basically use the power from the magneto for spark. im not sure if this is dumb or not i've never put a streetbike motor in a quad so im not sure. any help is greatly appreciated thx

I bet you didn't get the kill switch wire hooked up. The book is for 82 and up, but it will do for your purposes.

you need a battery for the initial spark, before the alternator can take over for the battery. you could hook a battery to it initially, get it running, then take the battery out of the system after it has been running, but why not just have a battery on the atv?

Well if it inicially didnt have a battery then the magneto might not be adjusted right. You dont neccisarily need a battery at all.

the charging system need a small amount of voltage to excite the alternator to cause it to charge. with out the battery you have no way of providing an electrical charge to the ignition system resulting in your lack of spark..
