Way back in the day, I'm sure that folks observed and somehow understood circular motion and concepts like the centrifugal effect, but it wasn't until Newton that we learned to describe what was happening using the language of forces.

Things like that aren't discovered by a careful theoretical study of the stability criteria for the centripetal Rayleigh-Taylor instability of elastic plastic solids in a rotating reference frame. It just takes a couple kids playing with the clay-caked wheel of an ox cart that fell on its side in the mud saying, "Hey dad, look what I made".

potters wheels were used as early as ancient sumeria, you don't hae to have a physics text to figure out the laws of nature. observation works just as well.
