because boxers wear similar shorts? or maybe when you lay them down on the ground, they're "boxy"

They are called boxers because the cut of the fabric is the same as that of actual boxers. It is designed to allow air flow and flexability so the guys don't have to contantly adjust the shorts while boxing.
