some of you say that its a leak, but couldnt the engine just be low on refrigerent? i mean its a pretty old car and its never had an a/c recharge or anything...and yes i do get air out of my vents; the temp. does change from hot to a little less than the exterior temperature, so there is change, its just not a/c COLD.

oh yeah, and ill be damned if im going to spend antything more than $150 on a/c repair, cause my car aint even worth $1000 so why would i spend that much to repair it.

Open the hood and feel the lines from the compressor. If one is real hot and one is real cold, it's working. If the compressor isn't cycling on and off, you could just have a bad mixing door in the vent system under the dash.
If you need some more refrigerant, you can get a can with a built in gauge so you put the exact right amount in. It might have taken ten years to leak that much out.

Well, the "holding back" is the compressor kicking on under the hood. That's presumably a good sign.

It's not blowing cold air. That says that there's a leak somewhere...which means getting it charged will do nothing, since it will leak out again.

Around here (southern ontario), average pricing for A/C repairs is 1 grand. Expect to pay more, but this is somewhere around what it should cost.

This is an expensive repair, but it will need to be done since I'm almost positive that you have a leak. If you know anyone in the business, have them look at it if they'll do it for free. You'll have to pay them since they have expenses involved for the repair, but try to find someone who can diagnose it for free. It shouldn't take them long to figure it out.

OK, so you're saying the a/c compressor kicks on, reducing engine idle. but you failed to mention if you're getting air out of the vents.
So.. are you? If not, the blower motor could be at fault, or the relay that powers it, (or a fuse). if you get hot air blowing, it's probably the air blend door under the dash stuck so it's blocking the cold air side.

can be any thing from "freon" for 100 dollars to 1500 for complete rebuild...just caust the compresser is going on and off doesnt mean its working..
