Simply put, yes. People want to hang the moral hat on an elected official. This is not possible. To get elected you generally have to step on so many people and sell out to at least one industry.

I agree with the previous poster, no one can be expected to wear that moral high hat... If the presidential nominee ran against nation building and was elected, but things during his time as president forced him to change his views, was he honest when he said he didn't support it? Many people could look at that and say that he just said what he said to get elected.
i don't think a president needs to be honest when talking about his personal life... i mean if hes cheated on his wife... i really couldn't care... its none of our business, but people could flip it and say that since he didn't go into specific details or tried avoiding talking about it, he has no problem lying to the American people. (this was the view over Clinton and Monica... it had absolutely nothing to do with his job, but people flipped it to make it sound like he wasn't competent enough to do his job truthfully.)
You can say that nearly every president was honest, but because views of things change, you can say nearly every president lied to the people to get elected.
Its all about how you spin it.
