I have been speaking with a private person who is selling their 2000 Audi A4 1.8T. They say the left control arm links needs to be replaced and thats all. Would this create problems in different areas of the car. he is offering it for $6,500 but I may be able to negotiate him down. Is this worth the purchase and am I gonna have a lot of problems with this car if I buy it. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

Sounds like alot of money for an Audi. That car is almost 8 years old now and will probably start to have more problems. You may end up spending that $6500 in repairs over the next 55K miles. I would ask the seller to repair the control arm and any other problems before even making an offer. If he fixes everything then an offer of $5800 or so would be good. Definitely have a mechanic check the car over before buying, a transmission replacement could crush you.

the timing belt needs to be changed within next 10-15 k
you are looking between 600-1500 depending where you change it. the control arm will not be the only one that needs changing. last time i changed them it cost me 1400 and had to replace all the front (8 of them) it hurts.

you are looking at about 2000-4000 worth of work minimum but you know what, the care is worth it !

mine is horrible for repairs but you never buy an audi on a budget. that is what civics are for. you buy an audi cause you want the quattro system in the winter when everyone else is driving 30km and you're blasting past them.

it's all in how the a4 handles, very few cars are better than it for just everyday fun driving. plus you can do so many mods to it to boost power and make it look good.

Sometimes its good to buy a car from a private person cuz car dealers rip u off sometimes.
You should look sites for another Audi A4 that is cheaper and better. Audis are very good cars.
I have an Audi S4 2001 and it works great! I love that car.
You can find other Audis on cars.com that are better and cheaper.
But for that car that price sounds kk but tell him to change that left control arm cuz u dont want to spend any more money on that car.
I had Audi A4 2001 1.8T and it had 35/k for $7,500. and the dealer sold it for 10,000 so u could get good deals.

as an audi technician, i would say no. i generally say, no matter how clean the car is, stay away from high mileage audis. 96k means that if stuff hasn't been replaced already, it will definitely start needing to be. i have seen perfect A4s before with high mileage but they will still break. this model, electronic failures were prominent, finish off interior parts come off easily, plus your control arm will not be cheap either. $6500 sounds high for this car and 96k on a 2000 is pretty high number as well. if you would like, you can contact me and ask me specific questions you may have. good luck.

first of all look at the service records (if there are any - i don't kep mine bc i'd go INSANE bc so much money went into my car - not just maint. so it would be a huge loss to sell). look how clean the engine bay looks. 1.8t are good motors if they were taken care of and SYNTHETIC OIL was used , there can be some sludge there , but if the motor runs well .. that can be a reason to beat down the price ;) and it can be cleaned up.
look for leaks in particular : oil / engine , rear diff , tranny .. make sure it's all dry (don't be affraid to get down and look under the car).
ctrl arms will cost you around 1k to change - for all front ones - something i would do (and not just one).
if the car is in good shape you get a lot for the $.. and you'll have to maintain it from here on .
5k for a used a4 or 35k for a new one - that 30k is a huge diff.

Hmm, Its Depends. Check out CarFax and Then Engine. Listen
these cars are high-maintenance. I would say ask the owner if
he has done regular fluid changed, from tranny to motor oil. If so
than yea, it should sounds like that car is in good condition. Hows the interior. And from personal experience, i love the 1.8T cause they can get crazy fast and handle alot. When & If you get it check this place out this place for support and ideas.

They are perfect everyday cars. Great gas mileage, and its sporty looking. I love the A4's Remember check the link below, im the admin there and would love if you joined us.

Have the engine checked for SLUDGE. This is a known defect on higher mileage 1.8Ts and you'd be screwed if this engine is sludged up inside.

(heat from turbo breaks down the oil, causing sludge, which in turn causes engine seizure).

Also it's time for a timing belt at 105K, and that's expensive.

If the car checks out and you do buy it, only use synthetic oil in the engine or suffer the consequences.

no. even for a 2000 it has too high of mileage on it. The left control arms are going to cost you more than what you pay for the car and second labor will be higher than hell for the control arms installation.

be sure to ask if he changed the timing belt...

timing belt cost a lot to change for A4 due to except headlight everything needs to be removed to reach the belt...
