I went to UC Davis, so i'm biased. I loved the fact that SF was nearby, i could bike anywhere from campus to my apartment. Small friendly town. Two all you can eat sushi places. I could go on and on.
Academically, the science is very good but i bet the same could be said at Irvine. However, i'm not sure Irvine has a lab where you could perform live chicken surgeries. We had such a lab at Davis.
Both schools are great so whatever you'd choose, you'll probably grow to love. Congrats!

US News rankes them at #44 (Irvine) and #47 (Davis) -- so you can't really say that one is much better than the other. Clearly, if you want to study anything related to agriculture, Davis is the better school.
Since they are comparable universities, you should probably make your decision on the quality of the particular department that interests you and on which location excites you more. They are very different locations. I've never been to Irvine -- but Davis is in the middle of nowhere in the Central Valley. It might make it a better place to study, since there will be fewer distractions. Or it could drive you crazy.
Visit both campuses to see if you like them.

They are about the same... it depends what your major is, and what sort of lifestyle you prefer. Davis is much more rural, which is nice if you're the athletic, outdoorsy, keep-it-simple type; but Irvine is slightly more urban and close to the whole LA thing, which is nice if you're more entertainment, fashion, networking sort of person.
Both have nice campus and plenty of great people, so it's just figuring out which is a better fit for you.

according to the rankings, UC davis is the better college. But what's most important, is which college is best for YOU.
