I am guessing he killed himself to remain in control of the situation. If he had waited for a cop to do it, he would have given control over to them. That seems to be a big part of what this was about. He felt like he had little control over his life and was taking matters into his own hands. What a messed up mind.

I think that he planned it all out from start to finish, without knowing how many people he would actually be able to kill before someone got to him. I think that he, like a number of other people, knew he would not get away with doing this horrible thing, so he knew that he would have to kill himself in the end.

Or, perhaps, after his rampage he sat back for a minute, looked around, realized what he had done and that this was real and not some movie or video game where you can hit a reset button, and then made the decision to end his life.

So he wouldn't face the agonizing 35 years of prison before finally getting exectued by Virginia State officials with lethal injection. He wanted to prove his point without dealing with the consequential aftermath. Whether he killed the 32 people or not, I'm sure he'd end up killing himself, anyway.

I'm going to have to agree with Chriscro... and Whitemag... sorry for not investigating your full screen names. I think a lot of it did have to do with control and avoiding the death penalty. But I wonder if he had also considered the fact that if he had allowed himself to live and surrender to VA Tech security and police... I wonder if he thought maybe he would have to endure years of psyco analyzing? I mean, Neurologists want to know what makes our brains tick anyways. And it would be even more intriguing if Neurologists, therapists, profilers, and who knows who else knew what makes a mass murder's brain tick. And it probably would have taken years because he didn't like to talk .... at all, from what is coming out about him now. I wonder...

Because he was emotionally disturbed. Too bad he couldn't have just shot himself first and left the other 32 people living.
