I actually took a course on serial killers in college. They are very disturbed individuals.
*Many are loners who seem to have no friends.
*They have very strong/overbearing female figures in their lives; mothers who baby them or are overprotective.
*Their fathers are either not around, mean, or are alcoholics/drug addicts.
*Some of them are very productive and trusted citizens.
*They hold down good jobs and are very charismatic.
*Some abuse animals or smaller kids while growing up. *Some have no ethical or moral beliefs and do not believe in a higher power.

I read a lot of books about serial killers...I dunno, a strange fascination about what makes them do the things they do.
Usually:
White male
Mid 30s to late 40s
sexual and/or emotional abuse as a child
sexual perversions...kids, necrophilia, various fetishes
abused animals when young
not loved properly by one or both parents
parents either divorced or fought a lot in front of child
That's all I got off the top of my head without looking it up.

Sense of not being recognized as the better person they perceive themselves to be, cruel to animals, sometimes had a history of car theft or burglary, sometimes intelligent, feel persecuted.
Lack of ability to have empathy with other people.

Sexual dysfunction, sociopathic tendencies, and profoundly low self-esteem (often ironically coupled with delusions of grandeur). They are often victims of bullying by peers, parents, or authority figures.
