By the way, I have seen Supersize Me, and haven't eaten any McDonald's junk since then... You guys should read Fast Food Nation, too!

Sugar is added to the fries because it carmelizes in the hot fat, making the fries 'extra crispy'.

Judging on what I've heard (mostly on supersize me...awesome movie!) and seen, McD's is trying to keep their standard as top and most known fast food chain. So, adding sugar and other things to their fries make them taste better....and makes them addicting! Another interesting fact: when McD's deep-frys their...well...fries, all the water is drained out and replaced with fat, and with the sugar they add it makes it almost no potato at all! Weird.... McDonald's must be pretty desperate to feed their customers PURE JUNK!

I think they add quite a lot of salt sugar and fat to make it tasty. I am really into healthy food and have a good diet but I think there is a time and place for Mcdonalds in life just as long as that time and place is not every day or week.

From what I've heard, the sugar is for carmelization. It gives the fries their golden color. When sugar carmelizes it turns to a caramel, which is obviously that brownish color. In small doses, it turns the color or french fries. It probabably works as a preservative too.

If you are looking at the nutrient breakdown, carbohydrates (sugar) will show up because starch (most of the potato) is broken down in the digestive tract and becomes sugar.

If you are looking at an ingredient list for the actual fries, I have no idea why they add sugar.

Well, they've gotta do SOMETHING to liven up those greasy bits! They're about as inspiring as styrofoam.
