don't confuse liberal with liberated. Liberalism has become a word synonymous of socialism since the communist party has invaded the democrat party. They have been able to make more progress with the name change, don't you think?

Apparently, I am one of the few liberals in America who is not a socialist. Many people who responded to your question have told the truth. There are a number of socialists in this country passing themselves off as liberals. Try as they may to change the stripes on a skunk, they are socialist and not liberals.
Simply put, a person who believes in equal opportunity is a liberal. A person who believes in equal outcome is a socialism.
In other words, liberals keep score at a T-Ball game. Socialists don't.

It was fine to be a liberal during the revolution because those people actually thought that the British was being oppressive and did something about it. Liberals now-adays just seem to complain about everything bad that's happening instead of doing something.

Since the fascist took over. Actually, in countries outside of the US liberals are laughed at for having no real opinions, middle of the roaders happy to sit on the fence on any issue.
You have to be right wing in the US these days first they destroyed the left wing now even those in the center are guilty - this is how Nazi Germany began.

Well, for *me* personally, liberal became a highly offensive word after rabid liberals attacked a local trapper. Why? Because they don't approve of his lifestyle. Too damned bad - this guy broke *no* laws and certainly does *not* deserve to be harassed by these idiots for 6+ years. Things got so bad that I made him call the FBI...

Since it came to identify a political movement in the US. That movement could be more accurately called communist, socialist, egalitarian, mutli-culturalist, revolutionary, or whatever. Whatever name it chose, though, this movement was bound to catch some flack from oppossing movements who (rightly or not) would attempt to tarnish that name.
Did we forget that we were LIBERATED?
No. But it is a sad irony that 'liberals' are not that interested in 'liberty' and that 'conservatives' are not that interested in 'conservation.'

Leogirl beat me to the Punch. She nailed it. Liberals started to be a dirty word when they started acting like Karl Marx and not Thomas Jefferson. Good call Leogirl
