Today is April 23rd / 07. I live in Sudbury, ON. The weather has been very hot recently - roughly 26 degrees Celcius. We barely even had a Spring. I've just been putting off planting these vegetables. I know that planting the flowers will not be a problem, but the veggies? I'd like them to flourish at least by August. Thanks!!

I'd wait a week if I were you.. it can go cold up there in a heartbeat.

Usually May 1 for veggies.

When you're planting vegetables from seed, soil temperature is the most accurate indication of when to plant Buy an inexpensive soil thermometer and take the readings yourself at a depth of 4". Once soil temperatures are consistently in the 10s you may safely plant most spring vegetable seeds. A few weeks later, when soil temperatures are in the upper 15s and 20s, you can plant summer crops.

Remember you can plant midsummer for fall crops just plant fast maturing versions. Seed packets all say how many days to maturity. Planting times are a rough guide not a rule.

Another way to determine safe planting dates is to watch for certain fairly reliable clues from nature. This is called phenology. For example, you can safely plant corn once oak leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear. Plant peas, beets, and lettuce when the first leaves appear on the lilac bush.
Plant corn, beans, and squash when the lilac blooms.
Plant cabbage when the dogwood is in full bloom or when apple blossoms bud.
Plant corn when oak leaves are the size of a mouse's ear, or elm leaves are the size of a squirrel's ear.
Set out tomato transplants when the first ladybugs appear.
Potatoes can go in the ground about the time forsythia blooms, and practically anything can be planted about the time kids start playing in the sprinkler.
For me tomatoes never go out before 12 May but Memorial day is used in some regions- 28 May.
Radishes grow in thirty days so are planted in successive waves, unless you enjoy tsunamis of spicey vegetables at your door. I plant part of a row each week for five weeks then as the mood strikes me all summer.
