Humans have a need to create patterns out of random dots of light in the sky, so in ancient times people came up with animals, people, and things that the dot patterns reminded them of.
The patterns aren't real, the stars in a constellation generally are nowhere near each other.

The stars in most constellations vary wildly in distance from Earth and each other... their only common link, generally, is when viewed from Earth, they are relatively close to each other.
