i believe "it" would be the predicate noun.. however 9th grade english was many years ago so dont quote me.
seriously, "it" refers to whatever task you are currently engaged in, like mowing, working, etc.. usually used in reference to work or labor of some kind, however not exclusivly.
i.e. "i was playing this video game called warcraft, but at 9 i decided to call it a day."

i notice that normally people usually say this when they are irratated or tired. they could just be going to sleep and starting a new day the next day or they could just need a break so they are calling it quits therefore calling it a "day"
