I have a friend with a Master's in Geography, an MBA, a JD and a PhD in Business and Public Policy.

I know a lot of people with two PhDs (a lot of Finance PhDs already got one in math or physics & couldn't get jobs).

I have a PhD in Finance, an MBA, I could have asked for an MS in FInance after passing my oral exams -- but didn't care enough, have done all the coursework for a PhD in mathematics and have done the coursework for a MA in philosophy.

So -- it doesn't sound so unusual to me.

No, not really. He is clearly interested in learning across a number of areas. I hold an M.S. and a Ph.D. in psychology, but I also got an M.Ed. in special education after that. If he likes teaching at the University, he should get his doctorate in one of those four areas, unless he really, really likes his day job. :)

I have 2 Master's Degrees. I didn't want to go on for the PhD (too much work for little reward).

I guess it depends upon what fields your friend's degrees are in.One degree sometimes leads to another (like one of the responders said).

I hope your friend can use the education to his advantage.

Unusual, but in a positive way.

it's unusual that your friend didn't convert those masters to PhDs

Hopefully, your friend won't have tuition(loans) bills to pay for the rest of his/her life.
