that is built into your emotions my friend. If your emotions peek during sleep or dreamstate you most likely will wake up unless you have medication putting you asleep.

i had this kind of dream and i woke up for i actually fell off my bed with the blanket and the pillow. i was so confuse at first for i was sleeping, the next thing i know i was diving to the floor. even had a dream that i was crying and woke up with tears rolling down my cheeks.

You may become conscious while you're falling and begin to think "Oh my god I'm falling and I feel like I'm falling what do I do?!" And suddenly within less than a minute you will regain consciousness because your body realizes you're awake. IF you keep your thinking to a minimum for awhile before going to sleep you'll see that your body will become stiff and unable to move unless you start thinking normally.
