If you decide to get it done, make sure you go to a professional piercer who will pierce it with a needle. The person above who claimed to be a pro is full of ****. 14k gold is NEVER acceptable in piercings, and guns can shatter the cartilage (which is why it's illegal to pierce anything except the lobes with guns - even that should be banned)
There is less blood flow to the area, so they do take longer to heal and infection can be an issue. Get it done right and follow proper aftercare (most infections are a result of improper aftercare) and you will be fine.

I don't know that it's so painful, but it can be dangerous. Piercing this area tends to get infected VERY easily and often requires some surgical removal of the infected cartilage. (It looks funky to have a big flat area where your ear should be curved.)
I wouldn't pierce this area just for that reason. Do your bellybutton or a second set of lobe holes instead.

My daughter did it twice, once when she was 12 it eventually closed up and she did it again when she was 14. She said getting the regular lobes hurt a lot worse than the cartilage. If you decide to do it make sure you go to someone reputable. Not the ear peircing places in the mall. Tatoo places uses a needle and it reduces the chances of getting the big bump on the back of the cartilage.

Hey...i have had my cartilage pierced and have been a proffessional piercer. It hurts about the same as the lobe but takes longer to heal because there are less blood vessals going to that part of the ear....go some place reputable. Claires will do a nice piercing...use 14K gold

I got it done, it wasnt that bad, it only hurts for a second then whenever you bump it into stuff for a few weeks.
I took it out though because it was uncomfortable to sleep on even when it does stop hurting. choose which side you want it on carefully because if you sleep on your side you'll only be able to sleep on one side comfortably for the rest of your life. I asked people who had it in for years- the uncomfortable feeling of sleeping on it doesnt go away. You could however try those "sleeper" ring earings in a few months after your hole heals and see if that works.

It does hurt. I can't believe I'm even admitting this but I had both my tongue and bellybutton pierced several years ago... the cartilage piercing hurt more than both of those did (for me, anyway).

It DOES hurt, but no more than punching holes in the rest of your body. There aern't a ton of nerves up there, but enough. If you think the addition to your looks would make you happy, go with it. It definately won't hurt as much as having my tongue done!!

I have several pierced there. It does hurt more. Even when you sleep on it, it can be very painful. Also they get infected easier.

i dont think it is the best place to get it dun. it can look a bit 'punkish' if that makes any sense! i think if u r going 2 get another piercing u should get the top of your ear, that looks quite cool!
hope this helps!
