Yes, I was about to bring that up. Russian's are techincally asians (in the asian part of the coutry). I hate it when people say that about Russian's from the asian side. They're all european. That's crap.

I agree with you. It's politically incorrect to just call all people with "slanting eyes and yellow skin" asians. Like people who aren't Chinese of Japanese or Thai or Vietnamese or Taiwanese or Cambodian or Laocian can possibly be asians.

Because they're not entirely familiar with the term.

In an asian country for instance there's more awareness for the term since we ARE a part of it...

In other countries however, its a different story altogether.
You'll be surprised. Some of my friends (in the US, etc.) still think all Asians are chinese, philippinos or vietnamese...

It works both ways really... When some south-east asian speak of Caucasian, they are often refering to Americans or English... The other countries are kind of forgotten.

In the past Asians were always referred to as "Orientals". I guess that became undesirable and hence over the past 15 years or so we all now say Asian when referring to people from the Far East.

In Western culture, "Asian" refers to East Asia, but interestingly enough, people in Asia refer to other Asians as "West Asians" or "South Asians" or "Central Asians".

Asia is such a large continent, that "Asian" doesn't really tell you much unless you specify where in Asia.

It's dumb, but the reason is that most Americans can not physically tell the difference between Someone from China, Japan, N.or S. Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. It's a silly attempt at not guessing wrong at someone's nationality.

because a lot of the time if you call someone 'indian' or 'pakistani' they can call us racist, especially where I am in england.
And a lot of the time I find it hard to distinguish the difference between indians and, what, pakistanis in looks..

Very good question. I always thought that myself too. Why do people refer African Americans as "blacks" when our skin isn't really black but brown.
