Ok, I just started getting into Idol recently, actually I just started watching on the ep that Stephanie Edwards got voted off. I got so into it that I went back and watched the first several eps. I recently posted a question on how Simon, Randy, and Paula could possibly audition all those thousands and thousands of entries! The answer I got back was that they r not the only judges, that they have lots of help. This is understandable. But, while watching the first eps, I am noticing that the entries that have made it the farthest, say, the top 15 or so, were all ones that appeared in the first eps being judged by Simon, Randy, and Paula. What are the chances of that!!! Blake, Sanjaya, Melinda, Sundance, Chris R, Chris S, and many more! Does anyone know if Idol is just a big set up, that the winner, or at least the finalists are decided from the start? The first eps only show about 100 auditions out of 100,000, yet we see most of the finalists within them. Not possible!

From what I read the producers does most of the interviewing. Some of them the judges will do, but most are done by the producers who will then select a certain amount, maybe 100 or something from which the judges decide the final 24. So the top 24 contestants are all selected by the judges...Sanjaya, Melinda, Sundance etc.

"During the auditions, the judges don’t show up until the last day or two, and only see about 100 people who have already been screened, first by producers (who see small groups and narrow the contestants to a few hundred) and then by the show’s executive producers"

I think it's scripted, based on the likability of the contestants.

As far as your judges question though: they're screening judges. In reality, in crowds that big, most of the people aren't going to be extremely good or extremely bad, but just mediocre. They wouldn't make it through the final audition process.

Then the really talented and the really untalented (the extremes on both sides) are sent on to Simon, Paula and Randy.

The really good singers that they actually see are more than likely going on to Hollywood for part 2 of the audition process.

The really horrible ones are forwarded on to the judges for entertainment value: they're so bad, they're funny.

So, yes, everyone who is on the show actually auditioned for Simon, Randy and Paula. It's just that they had to audition in order to even get an audience with the three main judges.

I'm not sure how AI is filmed, but since there's footage of the finalist earlier on during the auditions, every audition with Simon, Paula, and Randy could be taped.

The producers pick mabey 100-200 people. Some can sing and some can't sing (to give somebody for Simon to bash). Then the judges go through that list.

whilst the judges have been speaking approximately Jason's first music, Paula complete her comments with reference to the 1st music, and then she went on with reference to the 2d music, whilst Jason hadn't even sang the 2d music yet!
