God created man in His own image. Man alone is capable of knowing God and having a relationship with Him. That's our primary purpose. He gave man the authority and responsibility to tend the earth, to care for it, and to use it.

If you choose to ignore God, then you invent a purpose for yourself. Problem is, if you fulfil the purpose you invented but still don't fulfil the purpose for which God created you, you are still unfulfilled and empty. If your company pays you to assemble cars, but instead you become expert at crossword puzzles, who cares?

Why we are here depends on your personal beliefs. If you believe in Budda, you are here to learn to be a better being so you can reincarnate into a higher life form. If you are a Christian, you are here to do Gods work and make the Earth a better place for His people. What ever you choose to believe is what you use to justify your existence. What most people do not ever seem to understand is that the reason for being here is not nearly as important as what you do while you are here. How you live your life is what you will be remembered for, be that good or bad.
By the way, Fish and reptiles and dino's were laying eggs 300 Million years before there was a chicken.

Put simply, we are here because we *can* be. Whether or not you believe the Judeo-Christian God (or other deity of your choice) is responsible for the existence of life, life exists because it can. There is life at even the most inhospitable places on Earth.

That said, Earth is a remarkably hospitable place, comparatively speaking. There is a narrow belt at a specific distance from the sun (or other suitable star) where water-based life is possible, and Earth happens to be smack in the middle of that belt. Earth has a satellite that exerts a moderating gravitational effect on the planet and has served as a buffer to protect it from damaging debris. In short, Earth is the benefactor of a multitude of lucky coincidences; we won the lottery a million times. Unlike most extraterrestrial places we have observed to date, Earth gave life a one-in-a-billion chance to work, and life seized the opportunity.

So. You are the result of tremendously good fortune, or divine intervention, or whatever causative agent you believe in. To paraphrase a favorite literary character, what you must now decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. Perhaps a good question to ask is, now that you're here, what are you going to do about it?

Simple answer: According to science we are here to reproduce, much as cells multiply and the universe expands.
In order to do this we need to eat and sleep. Everything else is simply a distraction.

More interesting answer: We're here for whatever reason we choose to be. Life is everything and nothing, it is entirely subjective so it's up to us to make of it what we will.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of life. We're alive which is better than being dead, end of story.

sorry for this answer it's a bit unhelpful but oh well =P

It is! And suffering through depression I REALLY wonder why sometimes... I think that is a question we have to answer for ourselves tho, sorry. Every religion, philosopher, poet, author, artist, politician...they all can GIVE you an answer, but if it doesn't make sense to you..you still don't have an answer! Better still, ask yourself, why am I here? What is it that I can do that is necessary to this world? What do I do that has meaning? What do I want to pass on to my my children, to others in my world? What do i want to be remembered for? In that, you will find your answer.

Because we were born.

And since egg-laying reptiles and amphibians have been around longer than birds, not to mention gallus domesticus, the egg came first.

We are all made up of remnants of various stars following their supernova around the time of the scientifically excepted Big Bang theory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supernova

These particles formed the entire universe, including us. So, in turn, we are here because the most massive cosmic disaster in the history of the universe took place.

Does there need to be a reason?
We just are.
Have fun.
Get along with others.
Learn as much as you can.
Be productive.
Die and make room for the next generation.
