A friend of mine was stalked by a young woman who used three separate online identities to prey on my friend emotionally, and cause her great distress.

My friend has now arranged to meet this girl (in about nine weeks time).

Are we right in telling her that she is crazy to even think about it?

It definitely is a her - my friend has chatted to her on webcam.

This girl, very clever, and very manipulative, has also (by complete coincidence) targetted someone else we know.

My friend wants to meet her to get what she calls "closure" - we all think she is crazy.

No please tell you friend that would be a very bad idea and the stalker needs to be reported. One of the biggest problems for people on the Internet is online stalkers. These are people that for one reason or another just simply refuse to take a hint and go away. They continue to email and send you instant messages to you even after you ask them to stop.

To understand how to stop an online stalker you first have to understand what motivates a stalker. Stalking is a matter one on person trying to control another. Controlling you brings them pleasure. If they can force you to react this gives them even greater pleasure. If you scream, rant and rave they win. If you panic. They win. If you make empty threats to them, they win. If you argue with a stalker, they win. If you run around telling all your friends and the stalker hears about it, the stalker wins. http://www.baddteddy.com/stalkers/stalkers.htm

You tell your grrl not to be alone for this meeting. Make sure she has friends around to back her up. Meet in a well-lit populated place, all those precautions you usually hear.....

Closure eh? I understand wanting closure, but make sure she's safe when she gets this closure.

And if you're speaking of who I think you may be... I'll bust up the person who hurts her.

Absolutely not!!! your friend could be putting herself in danger. For someone to use 3 identities to harass your friend online is weird to start with.Personally I don't think it's ever a good idea to meet with someone you've met online. You need to persist in trying to talk some sense into her.(or at least arrange for a few of you to go with her if she's still insisting on going)

yes, you were to tell her not to meet this girl....because you are a friend who is concerned for her safety. my question is, if this person has caused her so much "distress," why on earth would she agree to meet her in the first place? people who "stalk" should be avoided at all costs....no telling how dangerous they could possibly be.

Yeah that is kind of daft, I doubt you'll be able to stop her from going, so go with your mate won't you? And have some guys there, just make it a big social gathering so nothing bad can happen.

This puzzles me. If this stalker has caused your friend great distress, why on earth is she arranging to meet her?
Why 9 weeks time? It all sounds very odd to me.

I wouldn't do it. This stalker chick probably has some type of fantasy about the meeting and might flip out if it's not what she expects.
