Money, pure and simple. It was a really money pit for them and didn't draw enough customers to continue the practice.
Also, Walmart does still sell fish from some select stores. THose that had a profit from the over all fish and drygood sales will continue to carry fish for the time being.

Fish from Walmart were renown for having health problems. I'm sure you could get lucky every now and then and find a hearty little fishy who would survive it and prosper when he got to your home. Their biggest problem was that all of their tanks were connected to the same filtration, therefore if one fish had a disease, all the fish were exposed to it.
I don't know if this is the reason they stopped, but that was the reason I'd give people in my advice for one of the million reasons not to buy pets from Walmart.
It may be convenient to buy from a chain like Walmart, but in the long run it's a much better option to go to a pet store where they actually take care of the animals/fish and have staff that are knowledgable, have experience with the pets they are selling and can help guide you and answer your questions.

I work at Walmart, and at one time I worked in the pet department.
When I buy my fish, I go to a pet shop because the fish are healthier. When I was in pets a few years ago, the fish would be bagged up the night before before we received them. Oxygen would be added to the bags, but the ammonia would build up in the goldfish bags, and would destroy some of the fishes gills.
I talked to the department manager just the other day about not selling fish.
Walmart has to make so much money per square food of floor space. The cost of electricity plus the cost of the dead fish made selling fish a losing proposition. It all boils down to profit and loss.

It is different store to store or area to area.
I have some stores that stopped and some stores that continued.
I think the main reason is they don't seem to have anyone qualified enough to work with the fish to keep them healthy and happy. Possibly poor/sick stock coming in on a shipment, then infecting the rest of the fish as well. Unless you have a wonderful person working there and taking care of the fish, they are in poor quality.
The risk of a random customer sticking a dirty hand in the tank, or something poisonous is also a lot higher in a giant retail store like wal-mart/kmart.
I have to admit though, the wal-marts here that sell fish, their freshwater section is cleaner than the fish stores freshwater tanks.

Profit ,if the store was not showing gains in their fish department the fish where taken out. Its all about the money at wal-mart. I work at wal-mart and my store still has fish. And not all the associates that work at wal-mart are idiots there are alot that know about fish and how to take care of them. The problem is the customer does not listen. What most customers don't know wal-mart get their fish from the same supplier as all the other fish stores. I buy from the surrounding fish store too.

Whether the store still sells fish depends on the indivdual stores.
In addition to what's already been said, many don't have that much space for live fish in their stores and can't compete with the bigger pet "chain" stores in their areas who have 4-5 times the floorspace and number of tanks.

I don't know where you live, but our brand new WalMart SuperCenter here in Marion, IL still has their fish and I believe they intend to continue having them since they just built the store and put in an all new pet department, including fish. Maybe your WalMart will reconsider if enough people inquire about it. Good Luck!

hi! i live in fla and i got told it was because they were not getting "heathly" fish in. my local walmarts manager told me this. it may also vary from store to store though. i bought several goldies there and had my luck and unlucky fish. as amatter of fact my redcap oranda laid eggs 9 weeks ago. her fry are 9 weeks today. you can always call your lwm and talk to your manager they should tell u the reason why they took out the fish..jewels
