Chickens are females, Roosters are males...

A chicken is in near constant ovulation and is capable of laying one egg per day which may or maynot be fertilized. If a Rooster mates with the chicken the egg may become fertilized. A Rooster need not mate with a chicken every day to continue to have the chicken produce fertilized eggs as the Roosters semen will survive with in the chicken for days if not weeks. In other words the chicken can store sperm .

Hens are all female. Hens will lay eggs whether or not they've had sex. The eggs will not be fertile and can't develop. Male chickens are roosters, and they don't lay eggs--only hens do.
