The things I don't like about the MLS is that it's not enough like the world game. No adds on the shirts, no regular game schedule and the things they try to copy make no darn sense. What the heck is Real Salt Lake ? What is Utah a monarchy now ? Or DC United, Manchester United and Newcastle United came about when two clubs " united " to create one club. As far as I know that is not the case with DC.

I believe college soccer has free substitutions. You don't exactly see college soccer on ESPN during primetime... Someone mentioned soccer being more popular than other major sports, citing the World Cup. But the World Cup is only played once per four years... The Olympics get huge TV ratings, but is swimming and skiing popular TV programs in between Olympics? I don't think so...
I think MLS is taking the right steps forward under their limitations: ESPN TV contract, building soccer-specific stadiums, over-the-salary cap allocation to one player, etc. Spending lots of money could solve a number of issues, but this would go back to the NASL bankruptcy days. No one wants that... And MLS can't compete with the European leagues with their multi-billion dollar TV contracts.
I believe patience is needed to make MLS soccer grow bigger. Let young American players succeed in the league with more playing time against international players. Be receptive to fans by providing good customer service. Develop relationships with youth leagues and colleges to expand the sport.
There is one thing that soccer has over every sport... Celebrating goals. A player can create any outrageous celebration they can think of. In other sports, it's frowned upon as trash talking. I think MLS should figure out a way to market that...

Americans need to see that they can make millions of dollars playing it. The reason why high school/college football and/or basketball are so popular to play is because they have the chance to get paid a crap load of cash doing it in the NFL or NBA.
Once an American player can have a chance get paid a lot of cash we will start to like it more. Then there will be a ton of players that did not become pros, and so there would be people who had played it as kids and loved it, so they will follow the sport as fans when they are adults have have money to spend. If people will spend money on it then we will give you what your wallet will pay.

More Americans like soccer than hockey. The world cup games draw 4 times the audience NHL do (3 times if you compare with the NHL playoffs). If we had a league with $40-50 million payroll per team (which means league full of stars) like the NHL, you would see soccer drawing much bigger audience regularly.

No, no don't start changing the rules of the game to "Americanize" it, by permitting free substitutions, time outs, finding ways to make it high scoring, etc.....If Americans at large don't get it as it's meant to be played, well, that's their loss.

Commercials after every score (don't ask me, they love it) be able to touch with hands, can score by running down a field with ball in hands, time-outs, 30 people on each team, be able to tackle, big armor and pads and turnover on downs.

Cheerleaders. More fights. Maybe even smaller fields. You have to attract the Americans on our level.
