A square table is constructed with an obstruction in the middle of it, so that When 4 people are seated, one on each side, each can see his neighbors to right and left but not the person seated directly across. The 4 people seated at this table were told to raise their hands if, when looking to the right and left, they saw at least one woman. They were also told to announce the sex of the one person whom they could not see, if they could figure it out.

Since, as a matter of fact, all 4 people were women each raised her hand but then several minutes went by before one of them announced that she was certain that the person seated opposite her was a woman. How could she logically have come to that conclusion?

She knew, because if there was a man sitting opposite her he would have announced that he was certain that a woman was sitting opposite of him. Since this announcement was not made, she knew it must be a woman sitting opposite her.

1. Assuming the woman who answered is sitting in the "South" seat, she would see two women in the "East" and "West" seats.

2. She then knows that if a man were sitting in the "North" seat, he would also see the women in the East and West seats.

3. Everyone raises their hand because they all see at least one woman to their left or right.

4. The man in the North seat (knowing that he is a man) would easily deduce that since the women in the East and West seats both raised their hands that the person sitting opposite him is a woman.

5. He would quickly announce the gender.

6. Since a few minutes passes with no responses, the woman in the South seat assumes that there is a woman sitting opposite her (either that or a really, really dumb guy).

As a woman, she could not have come to that conclusion logically.

It's obvious she looked under the table at the other woman's shoes.

Diamond engagement ring on left-hand ring finger. Men generally do not wear an engagement ring, and the style would be much different from a womens' engagement ring.

Ray has it. But this assumes that women are capable of logic.
