The word "phishing" comes from the analogy that Internet scammers are using email lures to "fish" for passwords and financial data from the sea of Internet users.

"Ph" is a common hacker replacement for "f", and is a nod to the original form of hacking, known as "phreaking".

Phishing refers to the practice of internet scammers sending out emails intended to send you to a false website so that they can gather your personal information and defraud you in some way. Like learning what your PayPal password and user name. Or your banking information.

So if you were phished you received one of these emails. and possibly replied to one.

I hate phishing. It's when some freak tries to trick you into giving them your personal information for identity theft.
