Like a book series, a television series is the work as a whole, and the seasons are volumes as they're produced. Episodes are sequential chapters of each volume.

Series is the whole show, season is the year. For example ER is the series and it is currently in it's 13th season.

The series is the entire show, every episode. From the pilot to the last aired episode or if it ended, the final episode of the show.

The season usually lasts from around Aug. or Sept. to April. or May. During the regular season, they continue to tape new episodes. During summer break, they show reruns.
