it depends on the type of weeds you are dealing with...there are some weed killers that attack broad leaf weeds and leave the grass. you might want to apply a pre emergent type herbicide that keeps various weed seeds from germinating and then again use the pre emergent in the fall. The best weed guard for grassy lawns is a healthy lawn. Proper watering--feeding--mowing will also keep away the weeds. Know there is no quick fix and it may take a couple of seasons before you are happy with the results.

Try Levington's "Feed and Weed", available in plastic sacks from good garden centres. It's granular, so for a largish area you'll need a spreader to spread it evenly. A spreader is a sort of trough on wheels. You fill it with the "Feed and Weed" and wheel it over the grass. It's good stuff, but it works best on a lawn that is almost free of weeds to start with. Once your lawn is almost weed-free give it a regular dose of "Feed and Weed". I live in northern England and I use it every four or five weeks. It also keeps moss under control, but if you have a noticeable problem with moss (or weeds) you should not expect "Feed and Weed" to cure the problem. I bought this house brand new in 1994, and when the builder laid the lawn I started using "Weed and Feed" as soon as possible. I reckon that I've got the best-looking lawn in the neighbourhood, and it's due to regular feeding. "Feed and Weed" isn't cheap, but if you want a good-looking lawn it's the stuff to use. By the way, I have no connection with the company that makes it!

The best thing I ever did was to contact GreenThumb. They come about 4 times a year and feed my lawn and also put weedkiller on it. You can quite literally notice the difference in days and it works out for me at £13 per visit, therefore £1 a week!!
You will not be disappointed honestly.

You can buy selective herbicides which won't kill the grass. There used to be a product called Weed & Feed. I don't know how effective it was but you may still be able to get it.

weed and feed is available for lawns at garden centres and diy stores. It fertilises the grass and kills the weeds at the same time, what more do you want -- its good.
