My sons birthday is 9-10-00, he is currently in Kindergarten. He will be in 1st grade next year. This is normal. When you say year one, I assume you mean Kindergarten. I'm not sure what country you are in. We are in the United States and most children start Kindergarten when they are 5 and a few start when they are 6.

Well I believe that most first year or 1st graders in the US start at the age of 6 if they are born by November 1. However after those born in the month of June are amongst the youngest in class and could be at a disadvantage.

I wouldn't worry about her not starting a year earlier. She has a year more to develop and she will be one of the oldest in her class which 'should' give her an advantage.

If your year 1 corresponds with First Grade, then your daughter should be in the 2'nd grade. In the majority of States, the 1'st graders are usually 6 years old and some may be 5 year old as long as they attain their 6th birthday on or before December 2 of the school year

Here's a direct quote setting forth California's requirements, they are by far the largest population of any State:

Acceleration to First Grade. California law requires a child to be six years old on or before December 2 to be legally eligible for first grade (EC Section 48010). A child who was legally enrolled in an out-of-state kindergarten (using that state's requirements), but who does not meet California age eligibility for first grade, may be enrolled by the district in first grade (EC Section 48011). A child who was not age-eligible for kindergarten (that is, the child turned five after December 2 in the school year) and who attended a California private school kindergarten for a year is viewed by the CDE as not legally enrolled in kindergarten, pursuant to EC Section 48000 requirements. Therefore, this child, upon enrollment in public school, is enrolled in kindergarten, assessed, and may (but is not required to) be immediately promoted to first grade if the child meets the following State Board of Education criteria, pursuant to Title 5, Section 200:

The child is at least five years of age.
The child has attended a public school kindergarten for a long enough time to enable school personnel to evaluate the child's ability.
The child is in the upper 5 percent of the child's age group in terms of general mental ability.
The physical development and social maturity of the child are consistent with the child's advanced mental ability.
The parent or guardian has filed a written statement with the district that approves placement in first grade.

It sounds like she should be in year 2, but I don't know what system you're going by.

I started school when I was almost 7, but I should've started when I was 6 --- the only reason why they wouldn't let my parents enroll me was because I wasn't 6 at the time of registration and you had to be 6 before you were allowed to attend school that wasn't daycare (some kind of rule of the area I lived in). My birthdate was to blame.

No, she's in the right place, if she is now 6 and in first grade! My son is only a month older than her (August 2000).
The deadline is December 1st for birthdays, not Sept. (comment to above poster)

She is in the right grade because of when her birthday falls. If she missed a half term of 1st grade, she may be repeating it yet again next year.

depends on where you live, my daughter was born on 10-29-01 and can't start kindergarten until this coming september because the city i live in says anyone born after sept. 15 has to wait until the next school year. so if your city has the same rule then it is correct.

No, that's right...Most children are in Kindergarten at age 6. 7 is a fine age to be in 1st grade! :-)
