You have a strange teacher. Let me guess--American history. Napolean sold "The Louisiana Purchase" to Thomas Jefferson after he defeated Spain, which had owned it previously (they were not amused). The problem was, no one knew just what had been purchased. Lewis was a botanist and natural scientist, and William Clark (the youngest brother of George Rogers Clark) was a scout. They took a team of explorers, interpreters and scientists from St. Louis, up the Missouri, down the Cascades, and on to the Pacific Ocean, meeting with local Indian tribes, mapping the territory, and recording species of plants and animals they found. Once they got to the Pacific, they split up and mapped more southern parts of the purchase.

The team had a great number of problems on the way. They had to raft upstream while they were on the Missouri, and almost died of hunger in the Rocky Mountains. Fortunately, they had a young Indian woman named Sacajawea with them. They found a tribe, and tried to barter with them for food. At first the chief refused, then Sacajawea walked in. The chief gave a shout of joy and ran to her--she had been kidnapped from that tribe when she was a little girl, and he was her brother! Needless to say, they got their food.
