A democracy is ruled by "the people" - and that might tend to end up in serious disagreements at times.
A republic (such as the U.S.A.) is ruled by representatives elected by "the people", which has proven to be an inept, inefficient, terrible form of government, mainly because those elected officials quickly develop a fatal case of hubris and suddenly forget that they have been elected to serve "the people". One only look at the incompetency, arrogance, cowardice, ineffectual, corruption of our own U.S. Congress as an example of how flawed a republic form of government can be. -RKO- 04/23/07
