Do they even know what a socialist is?

Can someone give me an example of a socialist policy espoused by Clinton or Obama?

I don't know what her plan is now, but her health care plan she crafted for Bill in 1993 or so was definitely NOT socialist, despite the whining of many who called it that without actually reading it (or reading it and lying about it anyway).

First of all socialism is defined as follows:
Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to control by the community. This control may be either direct—exercised through popular collectives such as workers' councils—or indirect—exercised on behalf of the people by the state.

Keep in mind that this distribution and control are done with or without the support of those who the property (or money) is being taken from.

As for examples of this type of behavior from the senators that you mention. First of all Senator Clinton, the biggest example of her socialistic plans is when first lady, she proposed a sweeping government health care program. This program would have taken money though taxation, and given it to the government to administer the program.

As for Senator Obama, he has not authored any overly socialist legislation that I am aware of. However, he has suggested during interviews, that he would like to see many government programs initiated that "help" certain groups of society. The only way to fund these programs would be though taxation. Essentially the tax dollars would be taken from some, and given to others, in the form of services. This fits the definition.

Socialist is an unpopular word. Instead of analyzing what the candidates say some have to resort to name calling. Those people have no concept of Socialism at all. Most are so extreme that they see anyone even another conservative who is slightly to their left as a Socialist or Communist. What that bodes is bordering on Fascism.

Extremism:
Far Left..........Pure Anarchy, Communism
Far Right........Fascism, totalitarianism

Most Americans are almost dead center with a slight lean one way or the other. The extremists lean much more one direction or the other.

It harkens back to the days of the communist witch hunts of the 1950's for sure. Fact is, any government sponsored and paid for endeavor will be called "socialist" by some. But, remember, our founding fathers established a post office, a navy, a financial system, an education system, all paid for with federal dollars. Government meeting the needs of her own people is NOT the same as socialism.

The problem is that many people cannot understand the difference between a social program that benefits the nation and a socialist government.

They are ignorant. I am a conservative, but none of the mainstream democrats, including Hillary or Obama, are socialists. Just like calling republicans fascist. I don't agree with Hillary or Obama, but they are not socialist. There might be some socialist city council member out there who refers to himself as a democrat, but that is about the exent.

Republican propagandists are labeling Obama and Hillary as socialists in order to try to confuse the ignorant. It’s the red-baiting techniques of the 1950s, slightly updated.

I totally understand your point and agree. However, Clinton does support nationalized health care which, however necessary it may be, is a socialist concept.
