the best thing to use would be a sound system of some kind, sorry i don´t know the name of it, i have seen them advertised on the TV a few times. they are safe for people, but insects and small animals leave the area it will drive them crazy. you could put it in one room of your house and the rest of your house is not affected.
or at least that is what i heard on the T.V.
